The exclave of Nagorno-Karabakh is reachable from Azerbaijan, but it is recommended that the region is not visited due to still-standing problems in the area. Azerbaijani-Armenian borders are also off-limits to visitors for safety reasons – though permission can be obtained through official channels, it isn’t suggested. Political demonstrations should be avoided if at all possible, as they have been known to turn violent and the heavy-handed nature of the police has been criticised. Hepatitis A and B, diphtheria, tuberculosis, tetanus, poliomyelitis and typhoid are known to occur, and precautions should be taken – sometimes including vaccination or inoculation. Water used for drinking, making ice cubes or brushing teeth should first be sterilised in some manner. Fruit should be peeled before consumption and vegetables should be cooked. Meat should only be eaten well-cooked and hot. Dairy products are considered safe for consumption.
