There are rail routes into Azerbaijan through Georgia and Russia, though as with road travel the Russian route passes through Dagestan – an area that should be avoided. There are no connections with Iran at the time of writing. Trains are said to be slow, and there are numerous reports of bandits robbing passengers on journeys.
